Green Heron: The Acrobat. Watching this GH trying to catch dragonflies was comical at times as it teetered and tottered on this fragile dead branch. It was also a display of the amazing balance this critter possesses. Long toes anchor its body to the branch enabling it to rapidly move in so many directions. Dragonflies don’t seem like much of a meal given the amount of effort required, but I do see this behavior regularly. Maybe it’s heron sport. Look closely at the top of its head and back and you will see the dark green color for which it is named. Local wetland Billerica.
